General Description
This article states how to stop a Windows XP or computer from automatically shutting down due to a virus. A window appears stating the computer will shut down in less than 60 seconds and begins to countdown towards zero. If this occurs, it is a good indication the computer is infected with a virus. The most common viruses that display this symptom are the W32/Sasser.worm and W32/Blaster.
Step by Step Instructions
These instructions must be performed within the 60 second time frame or the computer may shutdown automatically resulting in loss of anything not already saved.
- Click Start > Run
- In the window that appears type: cmd
- Click OK or press Enter key.
- In the command prompt window that appears type: shutdown -a then press Enter.
- The window stating the computer will be shutdown in less than 60 seconds should disappear.
- Close the command prompt window.
Troubleshooting
- Some Viruses are very perseverant and will re-launch the 60 second countdown screen again. To stop this window from appearing simply unplug the network cable from the wall or computer.
