General Description

This article explains how to change your Xbox's MAC address to the MAC address registered by your computer so that it will work on Purdue ResNet.

This article is not for the Xbox 360.

Step by Step Instructions

First you need to find your registered computers MAC address.

Windows XP

    1. Click Start, then Run, then type "cmd" in the text box and hit enter.
    2. Type in "ipconfig /all" in the Command Prompt Window.
    3. Scroll that list and look for Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection.
    4. The 12-digit Physical Address is the same as MAC address
    5. Copy down the address it should look like this: 00-06-5B-15-04-B4

MAC OS X

    1. Open System Preferences (usually found in the Dock) and select Network.
    2. Pick a location and specify the interface whose MAC address is desired in the Show: drop down list
    3. For Built-in Ethernet, select the Ethernet tab.
    4. Copy the MAC address labeled Ethernet ID, it should look like this: 00:0a:95:d1:52:30

Second you need to enter the MAC address, you copied, into the Xbox.

    1. Power on the Xbox with no disk in it.
    2. At the main menu, choose Xbox Live.


    3. At the next screen, select Network Setup.
    4. In the Network Settings screen, choose the Advanced option.


    5. At the next screen, set the field titled MAC Address to the address you copied from your computer.

Finally you need to make sure your Xbox is set to automatic configuration.

  1. Go back to the Network Settings screen.
  2. Click on IP Addresses.
  3. Make sure the Configuration field is set to Automatic.
  4. Go back to the Network Settings screen again.
  5. Make sure the Configuration field in this window as well is set to Automatic.
  6. Restart your Xbox

Your Xbox should now be set up to work correctly on Purdue ResNet.
